Burpee Hero launched to the App Store on August 4, 2020.
Burpee Hero is part fitness logger, part game. As you log reps of Squats, Push-Ups, Sit-Ups and Burpees you avatar gains experience, grows stronger and gains wealth.
As your character levels up, new areas of the game are unlocked including benchmark workouts and leaderboards.
The game is centered around your energy meter which is depleted as you do reps, and then refills over time as you rest. The energy meter is designed to encourage you to pace your workouts in a safe, but effective manner.
If you want to read a little more I've written a longer explanation of the problem and solution here.
My first commit to the codebase was March 23, 2020. I've posted a few other milestones to the indiehackers project page.
I shared the general idea for the app on reddit in April, and got a lot of positive feedback.
I also have with a mailing list where I post updates every 2 weeks. I've added the content of those emails to the blog.
My name is Ben Noland. I've been a software developer for 15 years. I made the switch to iOS development at the beginning of 2019.
